Statue Edo in bronze of dwarf

Statue Edo in bronze of dwarf

£1,800.00
SKU : Dwarf_Statue
Nigeria, Benin
51 cm height

Standing figure of a dwarf, dressed only in a short kilt that goes down over his knees,
arms bent at the elbow, two large bracelets and two crew-necks, very high forehead and
hair suggested by a series of parallel incised traces, the back of the skull accentuatedly
lengthened evidently reproduces an anatomical deformity.

Provenance: Belgian collection.

It is known that King Oba of the kingdom of Benin, populated by people of the Edo ethnic
group, liked to surround himself with dwarves. This is borne out by a press note contained
in the volume Naukeurige Beschrijvinge der Afrikaensche Gewesten ... published in 1668
by Olfert Dapper. The statue is to be related to a famous sculpture preserved in the
Museum für Volkerkunde in Vienna.
